Apply a detangling spray to the mat if needed to make the process more comfortable.

Carefully slide the tool under the mat, making sure that only tangled fur is positioned between the blades.

Use short, gentle sawing motions to split the mat rather than trying to brush through it like a regular comb.

Continue working until the de-matting tool begins to move freely through the coat.

Then use a slicker brush to remove the remaining smaller tangles. Finish by checking the area with a metal comb. If the comb moves freely through the coat all the way to the skin, the area has been fully detangled.

Clean any hair from the blades after use.
